Carbon negative footwear.

District is the realization of a long-standing dream: to harness the potential of the wine corks we collect to create footwear that’s not only stylish and comfortable, but also has a positive effect on the environment. This groundbreaking line is more than just carbon neutral; it’s carbon negative.

Carbon negative. What's the deal?

In short, ReCORK’s operations remove more carbon from the atmosphere than they add to it.

Recycled wine corks reduce
fossil fuel reliance by
replacing petroleum-based
rubber and foam with a
natural, sustainable material.

Cork is recycled through
a low-energy process in
a hydro-powered facility
and the shoes are made in
a nuclear-powered facility
with zero CO2 emissions.

The total green house gas
emissions from District’s
production are only
around 0.74 tonnes; less
than a single cork oak tree
absorbs in its lifetime.

ReCORK has planted
8,000 cork oaks to
ensure our carbon footprint
is offset far beyond
carbon neutral to
carbon negative.

ReCORK Process

ReCORK™ recycled cork components are made from wine corks recycled by businesses and individuals like you. Producing them requires minimal processing, low energy input and less water consumption than synthetics, and extends the lifecycle of an already incredibly sustainable material.

SOLE anatomy.

District features SOLE’s scientifically backed, firm orthopedic footbeds, made from recycled natural wine corks. The supportive arch reduces strain and fatigue and molds to your feet over time. The metatarsal pad lifts metatarsal bones to their natural resting position and the heel cup optimizes your heel’s natural cushioning.

Sole Insoles Firmness Scale

Firm vs cushioning.

This footwear boasts a firm, orthopedic built-in footbed. A common misconception is that soft insoles are better because they provide more cushioning. That’s not necessarily true! Just as a firm mattress can be better for your back than a soft one, so too a firm footbed with proper orthopedic shape and a deep heel cup offers more comfort by supporting your feet where they need it to take the strain off your muscles and joints.

Cork is harvested from the bark of cork oak trees in a process that doesn’t require trees to be cut down, but actually increases their lifespan to as long as 300 years, and boosts their CO2 consupmtion by up to five times.

The footwear industry produces more than 20 billion pairs of shoes a year. The most environmentally harmful material used is often the petroleum-based foam midsole and insole. Our recycled cork replaces this foam.
